Thank you so much for giving us the perfect place to spend our New Year’s Eve. This spot is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! It will definitely not be the only time we are here. We are planning adventures for the new year just to come back here. The space is used perfectly and the modern and mix of Newfoundland touches are just perfect. We are in love! Thanks so much!
…we will be sure to recommend this lovely place.
Guests: Carole & Don, Ottawa, Ontario
Dates of stay: October 10—13, 2014
Thank you Karen & David for the wonderful stay at ShoreLark in the Upper Nest. We love your décor and the ambiance of Petty Harbour made for a very relaxing stay. We felt miles away from everything yet St. John’s & stunning vistas down the coast are mere minutes away. It was wonderful to have met you…even if you did catch me in my pajamas so close to noon! Thanks again, we will be sure to recommend this lovely place.
…it is hard to leave this beautiful Nest.
Guests: Peggy and Lew
Dates of stay: Sept. 26—Oct. 4, 2014
In my ‘native’ language all I can say about ShoreLark by the Sea is “wow”, “some nice b’y/girl”, “oh my God”, “Grand”.
Karen and David, it is hard to leave this beautiful Nest. The view, the cleanliness, the everything. I can’t express how much I have enjoyed my stay. My 50th Nurses’ Reunion (1964—2014) was highlighted by a family reunion. The memories I carry with me. Peggy
Thanks for making us feel very welcome. Petty Harbour will always hit a warm spot for me. Lew
I can’t imagine a better place to spend a week.

Your little slice of Heaven is just that. Thanks so much for the Lower Nest. I can’t imagine a better place to spend a week. We thoroughly enjoyed the view and the village, and the hospitality of the Greens is outstanding. Thanks again.
Unasked for, unexpected, and very very generous.
Guests: Keith and Edie Pinder
Dates of stay: September 15—25
Karen, sorry we did not get a chance to say farewell. We really enjoyed our 10 days in Petty Harbour, staying in the Lower Nest. As we mentioned when we saw you earlier in the visit, our accommodation was more than satisfactory in all respects. The unit is in wonderful condition and very well equipped. You thoughtfully provide enough provisions to get anyone started and cover off those household necessities that are difficult to purchase in small quantities for a short stay.
Apart from the creature comforts, the Lower Nest is in a wonderful location to enjoy watching the activities in the harbour, either out on the deck or sitting inside at the table while eating. I have great pictures of the fishing boats going out in the early morning, and the men cleaning the fish. All from the balcony.
And the generosity of the folks in Petty Harbour is worthy of mention. As you know, we were there during the week when fisherman can catch cod for their own use. We wandered down one day asking if we could purchase some of the fresh cod for dinner, only to be told that under the fishing regulations, they are not allowed to sell any of the fish they catch for personal use. But having said that, the fisherman very generously gave us at least 3 pounds of cod. Unasked for, unexpected, and very very generous.
We left Newfoundland with very warm memories of our visit.
…a lovely, peaceful spot.

…this wonderful little village rises to the expectation.
Guests: Ginge and Dot, Springbrook, Alberta
Date of stay: Aug. 27, 2014
Western honeymooners. After 28 km. on the trail this is just the little piece of comfort and coziness we needed! (+ cleanliness, we needed a shower!). Thanks for dinner and the lovely view. Not sure when we’ll be back but would love to visit Petty Harbour again. ‘500 year old view’ is no small claim, but this wonderful little village rises to the expectation. Thanks again.
…coming back to Petty Harbour each afternoon to sit on your deck has been the best!

Karen & David, sorry we didn’t get to meet you. ShoreLark by the Sea has been the perfect getaway for us. We have done a lot of hiking around Cape Spear, La Manche, Ferryland Lighthouse and the Quidi Vidi headlands. The vistas have been spectacular but coming back to Petty Harbour each afternoon to sit on your deck has been the best! Thank you so much—your place is gorgeous.

Karen and David: This place is amazing. You guys have thought of everything to make someone’s stay here feel just like home. The view from the deck here in the Upper Nest is breath-taking. Thanks David for telling us about the hike along the East Coast Trail just up the road. We loved it. This place is a little bit of heaven here on earth.

Words fail us…
In our three weeks in the [Upper] Nest, we have found a new home. Your hospitality and friendship, the Nest, Petty Harbour, Newfoundland…All the beautiful and wonderful and kind people we’ve been blessed to meet! All the amazing nature and wildlife (whales, moose, Northern gannets, eagles, otters…) we’ve been so blessed to see! The peace and quiet we felt during the many hours we sat on the deck and watched whales going in and out of the harbour…We were so incredibly lucky to be here, to meet you, to fall in love with this piece of heaven—and rest assured this may have been our first time in Newfoundland, but definitely not the last!
With all the traveling you two have done, we’re proud and happy that you’ve fallen so in love with Newfoundland that you may come back—in January no less! Karen+David
…our most memorable stop in Newfoundland.
Guests: Jan and Dave, Uxbridge, Ontario
Dates of stay: August 4—8, 2014
Whether after our day’s travels along the Irish Loop, Killick Coast or Baccalieu Trail, exploring St. John’s or “crawling” George Street, it was always wonderful to come home to Petty Harbour and our most scenic Nest. The accommodations were beyond outstanding, and with all your warm personal touches, no doubt will be our most memorable stop in Newfoundland. We shall spread the word! Our thanks to both of you.
It was 1979 when I was last here; thankfully not much has changed…
Guests: Gerard & Brenda
Dates of stay: July 26–28, 2014
Although we end our stay in Newfoundland tomorrow, we both feel that being at ShoreLark by the Sea was a truly appropriate way to end our trip. The apartment is very comfortable and was a welcomed ‘refuge’ after hiking on the East Coast Trail or taking in the Colony of Avalon and The Rooms. Everything about the apartment is great,; having the washer and dryer was a blessing, -and then there’s the view! Tremendous, and such activity in ‘le petite havre’-loved watching the boats go in and out, and seeing the cod being filetted and speaking with the locals. It was 1979 when I was last here; thankfully not much has changed during that time. Thanks for providing such great digs! Our memories of Petty Harbour will be lasting and very pleasant because we stayed at “The Nest”! Best wishes.
You have a slice of heaven here.
Guests: Angela & Scott, Plantaganet, Ontario
Dates of stay: July 19—25, 2014
We have enjoyed our stay at the Upper Nest immensely! The apartment is absolutely lovely and has everything we needed for our wonderful week in Newfoundland. Thank you Karen and David for making it so perfect. You have a slice of heaven here. Everyone in town is so friendly. A lovely fisherman (Bobby) took us out to jig cod…it was amazing!! This province is truly beautiful in all respects and we will be back for sure…sooner rather than later. Thanks again.

…will never forget seeing our first iceberg and whale swimming in the harbour…
Guests: Lorraine & Robert, Port Dover, Ontario
Dates of stay: July 2—10, 2014
We have loved our first visit to St. John’s, Newfoundland. Petty Harbour was the perfect ambience at the end of a busy day hiking& touring the areas. We will never forget seeing our first iceberg and whale swimming in the harbour on the first morning we were here. The Lower Nest was so pristine and had everything (and more) than what we needed. Thank you for all your efforts making this such an enjoyable stay.
P.S. Fish and chips delicious!!
Thanks so much for getting the fresh lobsters for us.
Guests: Fred & Dianne, Comox, British Columbia
Dates of stay: June 31—July 2, 2014
Fred and I had a great two nights in your quaint cottage by the sea—wonderful views including the iceberg and friendly people. Thanks so much for getting the fresh lobsters for us. We know this feed will be a highlight of our trip! Saw the magnificent display of fireworks (Canada Day, July 1st) last night. During the day we travelled to Ferryland and toured the Colony of Avalon…how they survived in such isolated conditions!
Thanks again for giving us such a memorable trip.
…the National Geographic view is wonderful…
Guests: Ken & Linda, Rockwood, Ontario
Dates of stay: June 21—24 & 26–28, 2014
What a wonderful time we have had here in your Lower and Upper Nests! Your attention to our every comfort is amazing and of course the National Geographic view is wonderful…icebergs, seagull chick, fish boats, the “last crab boat”, fog, rain and sun. Being 20 steps from our daughter’s work at the Mini Aquarium was also the best. I hope we can come back! Many thanks.

This place has some of the most beautiful landscapes you will ever see.
Guest: Jeremy, Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA
Dates of stay: June 19—June 26, 2014
I had a great time staying at the Upper Nest here in Petty Harbor. I saw so many icebergs floating by as I hiked along the trails near Cape Spear. This place has some of the most beautiful landscapes you will ever see.
It was really memorable waking up before the sunrise and driving out to Cape Spear to watch as the day’s first light hit land. So incredible. I really hope to come back some day and take it all in again.
After…generic hotels…it’s a fresh and unique ambience!

Captain’s Log, 15 June (Day 1)
I just checked in and am delighted! After being accommodated in generic hotels so often it’s a fresh and unique ambience here! My road rations are now in the fridge, my green tea bags ready for brewing in the spotless kitchen and the skivvies in the washer. Looking forward to a great week in Petty Harbour.
Captain’s Log, 20 June (Day 5)
It’s the last and most beautiful day here. The weather is spectacular after a night of wind (NE) and rain that knocked the power out for a short time. I’ve had the best week, walked up the hill three times, eaten lobster, and enjoyed the warm hospitality of the village. Thank you, Karen and David, and I hope I can come back again to visit and just enjoy.
(Note from David: Amanda is a sailor with a Masters Foreign-Going classification, and she captains ships all over the world!)

Had an absolutely wonderful week & a few days in Petty Harbour! I’m thrilled to report that an iceberg is drifting southward as I write this entry. The views from the Upper Nest are unsurpassed! Also, the apartment is so well appointed that it really felt like home.
I enjoyed going down to the dock and watch the fisherman unload their daily catch. Speaking of catches, the fishing in First, Second and Third Ponds is fantastic! Troutin’ was a blast!
Thanks to David & Karen for their hospitality and service.

We had an amazing time during our stay at Shorelark by the Sea. The Red Plate Specials were amazing, the quality of the food as well as the room itself made staying here worth every penny. We’d much rather stay here than in a hotel in St. John’s. Expect us to be back here in the future!
